This image helps expand on the focus of creating an identifiable image.

The design is expected to work as a marketing tool, and evolve as part of the BlakeVic brand.

Although brands are fluid and change with time, one thing they share in common is helping to achieve a well-rounded approach toward successful business.

It's my hope that along my entrepreneurial journey this logo will help do the same for the my brand.

Seldom do I make politics a topic of my discussions.

It's a platform of conversation that ignites such strong opinions.

I'd rather listen to the experts and form my opinion based on the facts - always trying to consider the situation, and any variables before becoming to ingrained with my feelings - one way facts help us achieve justifiable opinions are through statistics; numbers don't lie

That is why I found this economic table of statistics evaluating Obama's presidential tenure intriguing. As a recent college graduate with major debt and few job prospects, the cost of living and the rate of unemployment are significant in my life.

My hope for our next president is that he would help make our country economically stable and allow the great minds and work ethic of this country to succeed.

Putting confidence in numbers like these and ignoring the slanderous advertisements and ambiguous rhetoric should be where our heads are at as Americans. Then we can make our own educated decision about who the best candidate is.

This post is not meant as anything more than food for thought to all who read it...

Saturday afternoon Ferris State University's Jim Wink arena will host a legendary Division II basketball rivalry between FSU and Grand Valley.

Prior to tipoff will be the debut of two new intros for the men and women's teams. Both will replace the pep-band and their 'Olympic Fanfare' introduction for the first time in five years.

I was asked to produce these 30 second clips that will precede Ferris' staring line-ups, and with limited time and resources it's my belief that they turned out pretty well.

One of the most exciting parts about debuting these intros during the most popular game of the year should be the response. With positive feedback the thought of moving forward with an even more polished product to represent Bulldog basketball is an exciting thought.

Michigan resident John Kerfoot has a gut-bustingingly sarcastic sense of humor, evidenced by his website: notsopuremichigan.com, which spoofs the state's advertising campaign: 'Pure Michigan'.

He affectionately clowns on all kinds of Michigan stereotypes, and has no restrictions on which group of individuals he targets.

One of his most recent videos plays along with an earlier posts of mine, and the winter season that is rapidly approaching 'The Great Lake State'.

Earlier this week the NBA owners and player's union was able to distance themselves from the egos and greed to settle on a new collective bargaining agreement that will allow for a shortened 66 game season.

Therefore we can begin to appreciate this professional sport for what it's worth, and that includes commercials such as Nike's 'Basketball Never Stops: KD Paint The Town' ad featuring Kevin Durant and one of soul music's greatest voices, Sam Cooke.

This minute long advertisement captures not only the passion that players and fans have for this culture, but it draws a fantastic relationship between sports and music.

I love listening to Cooke croon while thinking about watching some of the world's greatest athletes take off the lockout tee-shirts and return to the hardwood.

Much like last year's beast mode touchdown run by the Seattle Seahawks' Marshawn Lynch, University of Marshall wide receiver Aaron Dobson may have made the 'catch of the year' during the holiday weekend.

Every November the state of Michigan begins receiving it's annual visits from 'Jack Frost'...

Shorty thereafter followed by a visit from 'Old Man Winter'.

Last night the welcome wagon was in full effect as the southern part of 'The Mitten' was blanketed by a snow storm, and a reminder of how inconvenient this time of year can be; especially for our automobiles.

Although our car's struggles usually exist on the roads, this video is evidence that the weather can also have an effect on our ability to accomplish something as simple as a refill.

Dedicated snowboarders would not call this extreme sport seasonal...

But because 'Old Man Winter' is right around the corner, I consider it more relevant than any other time.

Earlier this year RedBull released a documentary entitled, "The Art of Flight"...

The video follows some of the sport's most significant figures as they travel the world looking for new "global adventures" and opportunities to "progress the sport of snowboarding to unimaginable levels".

Tonight this movie will premiere at GKC theaters in Big Rapids, compliments of a Ferris student and his goal of interning with Red Bull's extreme sports division.

ESPN use to air a show called, 'The Life' - I remember it because of it's theme song:

Last Man Standing by Harlem artist, Cash Brown.

The beat of the song includes a classic sample from Aretha Franklin, and oozes east coast hip-hop; it immediately caught my attention the first time I heard it.

Ten years later I consider the song timeless, and thanks to Google was able to find it on YouTube.

Any fan of hip-hop music should be able to appreciate the overall presentation of this classic - But I encourage you to check it out and decide for yourself...

As a fan of sports & music this video takes a nice shot (pun intended) at incorporating the two, and even without ties to Bowling Green I still appreciate a couple of things about what it accomplishes.

1. From a business perspective the marketing is fresh. It's nice to see that hip-hop is not only recognized as culturally acceptable enough to use as such a broad form of promotion, but also as a main channel of 'expression' for many basketball players and fans.

2. The generational gap and willingness of the donors to get 'on-board' with this idea speaks to the character of these millionaires. Being from an era where hip-hop never existed takes a sense of humility, and it's really neat that these gentlemen were able to put the product first and not take themselves too seriously.

I'm a sports fanatic, and I love music; hip-hop culture has always been a passion. For so long that culture has been a part of sports, but existed in a taboo way that only players connected with. As the culture grows it's nice to watch society grow with it. This video is proof that hip-hop culture and the rap genre are a very real part of our everyday lives, and after so much negativity surrounding both for such a long time, it's great to see them used to bring people together.

Design Flaw...?

Once upon a time someone told me that when the city of Detroit built Comerica Park they installed the scoreboard incorrectly.

I've been to a game, sat along the third base-line and felt like it was difficult to maintain a clear line of sight to the entire scoreboard; which is partially covered by the upper-deck overhang.

Plus there's the fact that a massive parking garage sits as the focus of Detroit's skyline, when just over the left-field wall, and beyond the scoreboard, are the red bricks of beautifully constructed Ford Field, and it's blue signing which illuminates at night.

Thinking three dimensionally it's easy to understand how this ballpark would look if the scoreboard were moved to the right. Not only would the parking garage no longer be visible, but the aesthetically pleasing Ford Field would be highlighted.

Although the idea of a more efficiently placed scoreboard is appealing, I can't help but feel the most appropriate ballpark in America to utilize the symbolism of a parking-garage is in the blue-collar city of Detroit.

With all that being said if anyone can shed some light on this mystery it would be appreciated.

This is a tough post for me to publish. Especially as a Ferris State graduate, and Bulldog supporter that bleeds crimson & gold.

However, with the 'Anchor/Bone' rivalry football game between FSU and Grand Valley right around the corner it's appropriate. Mainly because when it comes to establishing a nationally recognized Division II athletic program, and the facilities to match, Grand Valley is the 'gold-standard'.

The atmosphere the Lakers have created is pretty awesome - By taking advantage of wide-open spaces, their close proximity to a booming Grand Rapids economy, national championship successes and a well funded athletic department, GVSU has created something unique.

A prime example of this is Lubbers Stadium, which will hold well over 10,000 fans for Saturday's game. Not only is it home to a championship caliber football program, and speaks to every aspect, it continues to grow and expand. (http://bit.ly/mQot4B)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is true.

I think the Detroit Tigers are the only team in Major League Baseball who wear two different hats during the season.

The first being their traditional white english 'D' which is worn at home - And the second the orange 'D' worn on the road.

Each hat uses a noticeably different shade of navy blue, but remains consistent in every other aspect.

In my research I've found nothing to confirm this, but I believe it's one of the things that makes the Detroit Tigers one of the best organizations in the MLB.

My father has always been a fan of 'Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons'. As children my brother and I have memories of him walking through the house singing in falsetto tones to classics such as 'Ragdoll'.

Recently both my brother and parents have had the opportunity to see the hit Broadway musical, "Jersey Boys" - Which documents the story of Valli and his iconic cohort's rise to stardom.

The trailer makes the show seems worth the price of admission alone, but after the hearing about the experience first-hand my desire has risen to a new level.

As a fan of music and the performing arts it only seems right that this show take a place on my bucket list - Check out the trailer and maybe you'll be able to same the same.

Today NIKE released their innovative 'Pro Combat' uniform design for Michigan State, and it's October 15th rivalry game against the University of Michigan.

MSU is one of only nine Division I football teams that will wear the NIKE designed 'Pro Combat' uniforms during the 2011 season.

This "cutting edge" uniform, as described by Michigan State Head Coach, Mark Dantonio, is highlighted by the use of the color bronze - A design tactic which NIKE uses to draw a relationship between MSU's Spartan mascot and it's Ancient Greek inspiration.

Inspire Me...

For many years people have told me that I should consider a career as a motivational speaker.

It makes sense... I believe many of my strengths are qualities that a good speaker embodies.

Not only do I enjoy engaging a crowd, but I have a story which I'm passionate about. Plus... Many of the professions I've considered at one time or another (teacher, writer, coach & personal trainer) would benefit me in this career.

So why did I go to college to attain a business degree? I don't particularly like business, and I've never thought of myself as a 'nine to five' guy.

I've come to the realization that college was an opportunity to prove I could accomplish a bachelors degree, as much as it was about opening a door to a career in business.

After struggling to find full-time work I'm wondering if depending on someone for a job is worth my while, and beginning to believe my best option is as an entrepreneur marketing my story.

The circumstances in my life and belief that I experienced the things I did for a reason have me inspired to pursue this opportunity...

Since 2007 Justin Timberlake has been working to grow his upstart label, Tennman Records, A joint venture between Timberlake and Interscope.

One of the acts that J.T. has helped reach a deal with Interscope is the Memphis based band, FreeSol.

With an upcoming album release date still to be determined, FreeSol has debuted the single, "Hoodies On, Hats Low". Filmed in the streets of Memphis this video offers a look into FreeSol's progressive style.

Launched earlier this month, "Hoodies On, Hats Low" is rapidly gaining regional popularity, and with a marketing machine such as Interscope behind them, it shouldn't be long before we hear more.

Two things I appreciate... music & history. These things meet when it comes to the fife and drum corps, and the state of Michigan offers a fantastic version of this combination courtesy of the kids from Plymouth.

Every year The Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps makes one of their summer stops in Charlevoix to march in the Venetian parade. For years I've been watching these teenagers entertain, and along with the bagpipes they are the act I look forward to seeing the most.

I love the drum line, and their is something, not only soothing but also captivating in a historical way, about listening them along side the fife. Especially when you combine the two with the marching, color-guard and revolutionary war apparel.

The Plymouth Fife and Drum Corp. website describes their act as follows:

"Fifing and drumming was used during times of war to relay commands to soldiers, direct movements of units, as well as to provide inspiration and marching rhythm. The shrillness of the fifes and pounding of the drums could be heard over the cries of battle.
The corps is made up of 40 to 50 students ranging in age from 12 - 18 who gather from Plymouth and surrounding communities year round in preparation for its performance season. Its members are self-supporting and dedicated to preserving the ancient arts of color guard, fifing, and drumming through live performances at parades, historical and patriotic celebrations, concerts, cultural affairs, and other civic events."
Call it 'cheesy', but I think this genre of music and performance is really neat. I love the way they capture this country's revolutionary patriotism. Plus the music is something different, and takes me to a place that I associate with wonderful memories.

Once upon a time this nightgown belonged to my grandmother. From the design I'm assuming it was purchased sometime during the 1970's.

My folks now own my Grandmother's old home as their vacation spot in Charlevoix, and over the weekend my mom pulled this little gem out of the closet.

I believe it's part of the pre-snuggie era, and can be considered a precursor to the 'blanket with sleeves' movement that has recently trended with such confusing popularity. After all, comfort aside... Their ugly!

Whatever the case, this piece of fashion history gave us a great laugh. BigUps to my mom for allowing us to clown on her while she modeled this treasure.

I set a goal many weeks ago with my motivation being a sub 19 minute finish at the Jeff Drenth Memorial 5k Footrace in Charlevoix during the Venetian Festival.

Not only did I manage to accomplish my goal, but my time was good enough for 23 third place overall in a race that featured almost 500 runners. In addition, I finished in first place while representing the ladder half of my 25-29 age group.

The 'Drenth Memorial' has become a family tradition in recent years, and so has the afternoon that follows...

We run, watch a parade, relax under the sun, eat picnic food and enjoy the company of family and friends. This day has easily become my favorite of summer, and one that I look forward to all year long.

Kid at Heart...

On Wednesday my great friend, Trevor Klimek, visited town to see his family, and spend the afternoon with his newborn niece and nephew.

In the morning he took them to the county fair to see the animals, and that afternoon decided to continue the entertainment with a trip to the arcade, playground and grocery store.

Trevor extended an invitation to me as well, and I was happy to accept. The babysitting portion was no big deal with these well behaved kids, and I 'll take advantage of any opportunity to relive my youth.

Trevor's sister Kelly said it best, "Hanging out with kids gives us the perfect excuse to do all the things we can't do as adults."

Spending the day playing 'Pop-A-Shot' and 'Whack-A-Shark' at an arcade, running around a playground and shopping for cookies was a great way to make memories. And we did just that.

We won all kinds of tickets at the arcade, and had a blast spending them at the prize counter.

The playground gave us a chance to follow the lead of a four year old and run around in the sun.

And at the grocery store we took time to watch the lobsters 'hang -out'.

I really enjoyed the time we spent with these kids, and appreciated their ability to help us find the 'kid at heart'.

As adults we don't have the opportunity to take advantage of days like this very often, and as parents I think we probably lose perspective after a while, and wind up taking them for granted.

With all that being said... Spending the afternoon this way was slightly exhausting, but a whole lot of fun!

Hailing from Grant, MI...

Two of the past three years my brother and I have participated in the Jeff Drenth Memorial Footrace as part of the Venetian Festival in Charlevoix, Michigan. In 2008 and 2010, we both placed in the top three of our respective age groups and medaled.

Part of finishing the race is having your time clocked and recorded, not only, for future reference, but also as an official time to determine final results. In addition to your race time, some of the information used in recording these results is provided during registration.

Registering for most races usually includes payment to compete, being given a number and tag, getting a complimentary tee-shirt and providing your particulars such as name, age and city.

Both years my brother and I have successfully registered with the exception of one minor detail that continues to leave us a little confused. We have both submitted our personal info as being twenty somethings from the city of Big Rapids... However, year after year the final race results show us to be from Grant, MI.

This is irrelevant, but random nonetheless. We cannot help but wonder, and even inquire as to why this mistake is continually made. My explanation is that we must be saved into a database which will continue to show us being from Grant, MI until changed. That change may never take place because it's such a minor detail, and not one either of us cares too much about.

So - For the time being, and possibly for the rest of our Drenth Memorial races, Matt and I will continue to represent the town of Grant, MI proudly. After all, they are the Tigers, and in this state that's a mascot I have no problem being associated with.

In 2011 I spent my Independence Day weekend with my family in Fredrick, Maryland, where we celebrated my cousin Mitch and his bride Lauren's wedding.

Fredrick is located in the north-central part of Maryland, and is home to approximately 65,000 residents, which makes it the second largest city in the state behind Baltimore.

One of the most unique things about Fredrick is the location. The city literally is an hour drive, or less, from the Atlantic Ocean, Washington DC, West Virginia, Virginia & Pennsylvania.

As a lifetime Michigan resident who is used to wide-open spaces, I had little perspective about how condensed the east-coast actually is until I traveled through it. I thought it was really neat how, even hundreds of years after the fact, the establishment of our thirteen original colonies is still very much alive.

That history is no more apparent than in the original buildings and landmarks that still stand; the colonial influence is a part of many historical aspects of life. From the beautiful churches to the compact housing that runs along cobblestone walkways, it's a throwback that highlights the early years of our great country dating back to the mid 18th century.

Frederick in particular is one of the oldest cities in America. It was originally settled in 1745 - 31 years prior to the declaration of our independence in 1776.

This region has been home to some of the most significant events in our country's history. The wars fought and the decisions made have helped shape the last 250 years of life in this great land. I couldn't help but think about how I was walking the same grounds that British and American soldiers did during the Revolutionary War, or how some of the most historic battles of the 'Civil-War' were fought just miles away.

Furthermore, this area was home to many of our country's founding forefathers, and the work they did to preserve our future with things such as the drafting and signing of the 'Deceleration of Independence' & 'Bill of Rights'.

Coming from someone who tries his best to appreciate history, it was an incredibly awesome feeling to attempt to grasp the true gravity of what this part of America is all about.

And no better time to have done it than over the 'Fourth of July weekend!

Battle LA...

Yesterday the LA Dodgers and their owner, Frank McCort, declared bankruptcy. Many see this as a last ditch attempt by McCort to save the ownership of his team before Major League Baseball steps in and assumes day to day operations.

Their are multiple ways to diagnose McCort's failure as an owner, but I feel the most amusing is the overall 'bad' business behind this epic collapse. Fundamentally, the mismanagement of the team's payroll and organizational finances along with a super ugly & public divorce, which caused a significant dent in Mr. McCort's pockets & altered his future plans for the team, can both be attributed to the outcome.

The interesting thing about these particular elements of the bankruptcy claim are that Mr. McCort has proven himself a pretty savvy business man during a majority of his tenure as Dodger's owner and even prior. McCort initially made his fortune in real-estate along the east coast as a Boston resident, and as Dodger's owners he increased the overall value of the team to $727 million by 2010.

However, with all of the success Mr. McCort achieved as Dodger's owner, it seems he was unable to realize how connected his personal life was to that of his business. Prior to the announcement of Mr. McCort's divorce from wife Jamie McCort in 2009, they shared ownership of the club with his 'better-half' assuming duties as franchise CEO. Jamie McCort was publicly quoted referring to herself as the, "First female CEO of a baseball team."

Following their divorce in 2010, Mr. McCort made a significant error in his eventually bankruptcy claim by basing a settlement for the separation on a 17 year television deal with FOX Television; that deal was contingent on Major League Baseball's approval. The MLB has since dismissed that deal and has no plans of ever approving it. Without the deals approval Mr. McCort's divorce settlement, in addition to his financial plans for the future of the Dodgers franchise have been irreversibly jeopardized.

Also existing as the most entertaining characteristic to this story are some of the contracts signed by the Dodgers in their quest for a World Championship. Many of these ridiculous deals are still part of this team's payroll, and absolutely helped contribute to the franchise burying itself financially. Barring the divorce settlement or even an approval of the television deal we the public may have never been made aware of the monetary miscues, but that is not the case.

As is customary with any bankruptcy filing, you must show what you owe to all third-parties. Check out some of the names on this list of the LA Dodgers top-ten creditors. Their irrelevance is proof that the contracts they signed were not very strong business decisions.

Mr. McCort has created a sloppy mess out of his ownership of the LA Dodgers; A battle LA if you will. Eventually he will lose this battle, but it poses a legitimate question. Who will be the next owner of the Dodgers.

Once upon a time Mark Cuban showed interest in the Chicago Cubs, his interest was spurned by baseball traditionalist that felt he would rub many people the wrong way with his ownership style. However - Since toning down his passion and proving he's capable of owning a championship caliber team with his liberal approach... Is there a better place than Los Angeles to test this experiment?

Why not? After all, how much worse can the current situation get?

During any Gus Macker weekend you can always count on the dunk competition to provide entertainment. This past tournament was no exception with, my guy, Bryan Pasciak attempting to defend his 2010 title. Although he fell short of keeping the crown he still supplied the crowd with some high-flying dunks that were arguably the best of the contest.

After the first couple of dunks the Pasciak supporters were under the impression that Bryan had retained his title. Especially after he jumped over two people that included a six foot six inch man. However, he was ultimately dethroned by the 'chair dunk' which helped earned first place.

Missing from the video is Bryan's attempt at a windmill off the backboard which he finished the day before wearing a pair of boat shoes. Had that dunk gone down their is no doubt in my mind that the victory would have been his.

Bottom line... The contest was a whole lot of fun! Here are the highlights:

A network at your disposal can be a very nice luxury to have. Especially when it comes to utilizing that network for reasons like finding a place to stay while traveling. This specifically pertains to the 2011 Ludington Gus Macker Tournament and my lodging over the weekend.

Thanks to some special friends and their statewide basketball fraternity we were able to travel to Ludington without prior sleeping arrangements, and still find a very comfortable situation without spending a dime.

Our weekend residence was loaned to our friend, Spencer Sellner, by friends of his family: The Hamlins. Mr. Hamlin's father was an original architect of this beautiful community which rests along man made canals that open into Lake Michigan.

The Hamlin's opened their home to us; we were offered their food and all of the amenities available at this quaint little summer-home. It was the most pleasant surprise being extended an invitation to stay here. Upon our arrival it was immediately obvious that the atmosphere created was just like visiting your grandparents.

The endless decorations that spoke to the vacation state of mind provided a very relaxing element to our stay. Not to mention the snacks upon snacks, and the overall setting of being in this waterside community that was accented by trolling boats and chirping wildlife.

We were so fortunate to have had such an awesome place to stay. To be well fed and sheltered without ever having to swipe a charge-card was more than I could have ever imagined. I did my best to appreciate everything about this special situation, including taking some 'me-time' to enjoy a post-run omelette on the deck while I listened to the birds.

We truly were blessed to have stayed at the 'Hamlin House' - Here is hoping that this becomes part of the annual tradition that is 'Macker' weekend for my friends and I.

I think it's funny enough to make an appearance on one of those 'Year's Best Commercials' episodes that air from time to time. Baby Steps...

I enjoy new shoes, who doesn't? Pulling a fresh pair of kicks out of the box for the first time, and taking in the new shoe smell is similar to sitting down in a brand new car and taking a deep breath.

However, as much as I love new shoes I don't buy them that often. Particularly when it comes to running shoes. It's recommended that you replace your running shoes every 250 miles or so depending on a few different factors. I've been known to take my running shoes to the 500 mile mark where multiple blowouts usually occur.

This may not seem like much of an issue now, but I'm sure later in life I will probably pay the price. Your feet and joints take a terrible beating when it comes to running, and as someone who has already experienced multiple ACL surgeries, I would assume it's in my best interest to replace my shoes as recommended.

With that being said, I took a trip to MC Sports this evening with the intention of replacing both my running and basketball shoes which have remained in use long past the point of no return.

The basketball shoes were a very common purchase, size nine as usual. The running shoes on the other hand caught me slightly off-guard. I've always known that both my feet and hands are kinda small for my body. I feel like most women have larger 'mits' than I do, but until this evening I never realized that my feet are in a similar situation.

Tonight's experience took me to a place that I have not been in 15 years. I bought a pair of Nike Lunarglides, size 8 1/2 - I haven't worn that size shoe since the seventh grade!

Size aside, the Lunarglides seem to be a nice shoe; very comfortable. Moreover, it's important to remember that all shoes fit differently. Just because you wear one shoe at an 8 1/2 doesn't mean that is your size.

Yet and still I cannot believe that as a grown man I purchased a size 8 1/2 shoe; It's crazy to me.

To think that most middle school boys, that are still growing, are already wearing shoes larger than me kinda blows my mind.

No worries... Like that title says, 'Baby Steps' - My smaller feet may cause me to take a little longer getting 'there', but eventually I'll make it too.

While in South Carolina I was blessed with the opportunity to workout at Greenville's Imagine Center, part of the Redemption Outreach Program, and described on the website as follows:

Imagine where your life could be if you finally transformed your health into what you were meant to feel and look like. During this time I was also encouraged on multiple occasions to consider a part-time career as a personal trainer. I have always enjoyed competition, and found in recent years that staying in shape is not only the key to strong physical health, but mental as well. The idea of helping others achieve the same sentiment is very appealing, in addition to doing something I enjoy as a profession.

The attitudes shared by those who keep exercise as a part of their lifestyle are usually much more positive than those who do not. I experienced this first hand with the people who populate the Imagine Center & Redemption Outreach. This establishment offers an excellent outlet to maintain good health, and does so with a christian undertone. It's easy to understand why many consider it 'a home away from home'.

My trip to South Carolina introduced me to an entirely different region of this country; I thoroughly enjoyed the southern hospitality.

Oddly enough I was also introduced to a couple of different experiences which were relative to Japanese culture; Those being my first shots of saki and a trip to a hibachi grill, Wasabi.

Both experiences were memorable. The Japanese know how to show you a good time and still provide a quality service at a very cost efficient price. We ate, drank and were entertained for an extremely reasonable bottom line.

Warm alcohol is unique and quite tasty - I had always been familliar with saki, but after tasting it and appreciating the atmosphere in which we did so, I can confidently say that I would do it again.

In addition, the pure entertainment factor of sitting next to a hibachi grill proves worth your time and money. The cooks are incredibly engaging, and eating such a filling meal places second next to watching these men work the craft that they so skillfully demonstrate.

I was thoroughly impressed with the Japanese culture, their dedication to providing an authentic service, plentiful amounts of food and drink offered at a reasonable price, and the overall experience.

I'm very happy that I was able to gain a much greater appreciation for these traditional Japanese customs, and look forward to my next experience!

When It Rains It Pours...

Every year I look forward to watching the Indianapolis 500 - This year was no different.

It's a great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. Watching the 'Great American Race' and all of the rituals is Americana at its best. I usually find myself on the couch with a snack during the beginning of the event, dozing off for a quick nap in the middle and waking up to watch an exciting finish.

The combination of Memorial Day weekend and such an easy afternoon usually make for a peaceful state of mind entering the week ahead. Unless of course your 23 year old rookie driver, JR Hildebrand, who's 2011 Indianapolis 500 was less than ideal.

As a matter of fact, 2011 is turning into a year to forget for this youngster who was a turn away from being the youngest Indy Champ, and cashing in on a $1 million dollar purse.

In addition to Hildebrand's disastrous outcome at Indy he has also recently encountered more troubled waters in his life with a recent injury that will prevent him from driving for the foreseeable future.

ESPN reporter, Terry Blount reported the following news in an article written this week:

Hildebrand was taking part in a TMS promotion at the track Wednesday, called "Driven To Fitness," a boot-camp style obstacle course to prove race car drivers are athletes. Drivers Ryan Briscoe and Will Power also participated in the promotion. Track star and four-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson was the instructor for the drivers.

The final test was a hurdles race, but Hildebrand's knee hit the wood on the final hurdle. TMS officials took Hildebrand to the infield care center, where he learned of the ACL tear.

As someone who has previously torn his ACL twice I am empathetic to Hildebrand's situation. Although, I have no idea what it feels like to lose the biggest racing event in the United States along with a cool million. Eventually things will improve for this talented 23 year old driver, but for JR Hildebrand in 2011 it hasn't just rained... It's poured!

Greed: A Deadly Sin...

It's been almost three full years since the 2008 recession that was marked as the worst economic period for the United States since the 'Great Depression'.

From that era comes the 2010 documentary 'Inside Job' which, "Takes a closer look at what brought about the financial meltdown" that affected so many Americans.

IMDB's storyline description of the movie reads as follows:

" 'Inside Job' provides a comprehensive analysis of the global financial crisis of 2008, which at a cost over $20 trillion, caused millions of people to lose their jobs and homes in the worst recession since the Great Depression, and nearly resulted in a global financial collapse. Through exhaustive research and extensive interviews with key financial insiders, politicians, journalists, and academics, the film traces the rise of a rogue industry which has corrupted politics, regulation, and academia. It was made on location in the United States, Iceland, England, France, Singapore, and China."

I've provided the trailer to this eye opening documentary for you all to watch. Not only is this an interesting story worth your while, it's a window into a place that many of us have no idea even exists.

In honor of the legendary Allen Iverson celebrating his 36 birthday today I would like to revisit one of professional sport's greatest rants. The, "We're talking about practice" tangent that A.I. laid on the media during a 2002 press conference.

As enigmatic as Iverson was on the floor, this particular presser helped put him in a very infamous light. At the same time it also epitomized the athlete that Iverson was, and almost ten years later DJ Steve Porter was able to capture the moment in time with his "Press Hop" remix.

Get Fit...

I really enjoy exercise; It's therapeutic and also very addicting.

As long as your not excessive, you eat right and get plenty of rest, working out can be considered a healthy addiction, and one most humans can appreciate.

Regardless of your motivation, staying fit should be important to all able bodied people because of the positive side effects it offers. Thus, exercise should be something we make an effort to do on a daily basis.

But what about when your away from home along with the routine your used to?

Being away from home can always offer a challenge when it comes to following your routine or even establishing a new one while your away. It's important to remember that boredom during a workout is very common, and that varying your exercise is a great way to stay consistent.

That is one reason that I'm enjoying my altered routine here in Greenville, SC.

I've had the opportunity to workout at a new gym, with different equipment and a slightly variated approach to staying in shape. It's been great because the newness in my routine has provided a different drive than I'm normally used to.

That drive has also confused my body and given it something different than it's used to. Which is one of the key components to the success of a workout plan such a 'P90X': muscle confusion.

Since being in Greenville I've received many compliments on how strong, cut and well conditioned I look. I attribute my progress and achievements to my personal efforts in and out of the gym. I feel great and in large part that is due to the way I care for my body with exercise, food and rest.

For all of you who are on the fence about working out... I encourage you to give it a try.

No, it's not going to be easy. It's a lot of hard work, but the payoff is incredible.

Exercise is the key to strong mental and physical health. It will improve you attitude, your relationships and most importantly your approach toward life.

I know that the Dallas Cowboys are America's team. Translation... They have fans from coast to coast, and that includes Greenville, South Carolina.

Now, I have seen plenty of NFL promotional work highlighting the guys who paint their entire body, weather ridiculous conditions in a bare chest, show up hours before kickoff to tailgate and scream at the top of their lungs until their voice is gone...

The super fans.

Every team has got them, and these fans are always looking for a way to one up the competition with some sort of identifiably excessive way to prove their fan-hood.

That includes customizing their automobile to be a gaudy campaign wagon on wheels. Wether it's the paint job, pennants streaming from the antenna or an interior covered in logos, these fans don't seem to care.

In fact they are proud to a fault of their fan-mobiles that in actuality are rolling distractions waiting to cause the next ten car pile-up - Because seeing these things is similar to passing an Amtrack wreck, we can't take our eyes off of it.

With that being said, check out the level that this Cowboys fan, who apparently can't let go of the glory days from the 90's, has done to his whip...

Risky Business...

Last friday I flew to Greenville, South Carolina from Grand Rapids, Michigan via Delta Airlines.

Prior to leaving I stuffed some things into a small glasses pouch, put them into my carry-on and headed to the airport.

What exactly were the items?

My usb, a tube of chap-stick, some hand sanitizer and a bottle of eyedrops.

Yes... Hand sanitizer and eyedrops.

According to TSA Regulations it is illegal to carry these products in your carry on unless they are stored in a ziplock bag, weigh three ounces or less and are submitted for screening during the security check.

Although both liquids were packaged in containers weighing less than 3 ounces, they were not stored in a ziplock bag, and I never submitted them during the security check.

(It's important to mention that this was a mistake and not something I did intentionally.)

During the screening process I was randomly selected for additional testing of explosive materials on my hands. I passed, and was allowed to take my bags to the terminal where I waited to board my flight.

I didn't realize my error until we were in mid-flight.

More importantly I began to think about the error GRR's airport security made by not discovering the packing miscue. Had my intentions been different the consequences could have potentially been disastrous.

Thank goodness that was not the case, but the outcome got me wondering...

How frequently does this type of thing happen?

As meticulous as we are about protecting our flights will we ever be safe 100% of the time?

With everything that is being done, including what some call intrusive body searches the unfortunate yet realistic answer is probably no.

Anytime you fly your taking a risk. The opinions on how to combat those risks, especially now that terrorism must be considered, vary from individual to individual.

Personally I have never been in favor of excessive inspection - However, my recent experience has shown me that our airways are still venerable, and that excessively searching someone and their luggage may very well be necessary to ensure safety.

It's impossible to assume that every violation regarding commercial flight is discovered but because that is the reality, as safe as they claim flying is, navigating the airways during this day in age is ultimately risky business.

The business card is an important ingredient in the presentation and branding of one's image.

During my time as a student and employee at FSU I utilized a few different examples.

My first business card was issued to me as an advertising account executive with the athletic department. As a student it was great having a card I could use when introducing myself.

After finishing my work managing accounts I realized not just the importance, but the logic behind having a business card. It's a must! Especially in the business world, and even more so as a young professional attempting to brand yourself.

My experience with the athletic department card led me to my second business card. Designed in a sharp crimson red with the FSU torch, this card represented me once I reached the ladder half of my education as a Music Industry Management student.

As of this afternoon I picked up my most recent business cards. I really like them; The design is very classy. More importantly, I feel they accomplish exactly what was intended with the focus being personal branding and promotion of my website.

The 'BlakeVic' card will represent me during my search for full time employment, and very possibly may continue to be my business card of choice into the future.

Anniversary...

It was just about one year ago that my father retired from his position as the Athletic Director at Ferris State University.

On the day of the press conference I recorded the event in hopes of someday reliving what probably seemed like a pretty surreal experience for my dad...

Especially as this moment culminated 30 years of service he contributed to the University.

As a dedicated employee, alum and fan of the Bulldogs, who sacrificed much of his time and efforts toward the betterment of the school, I wanted to make sure my pops knew how proud I was to be his son.

With a simple lighthearted question I was able to do just that...

And as the anniversary of the retirement approaches it's only right that I post the video.

Happy Memorial Day to all... And a very special thank-you to all of the service men and women who have sacrificed their time, efforts and lives for our freedom.

Although I was unable to find much documentation to validate this post, due to the celebration of one of our country's greatest holidays, it is necessary nonetheless.

Does anyone remember 'Operation TNT'...?

During the 1990's Turner Network Television would honor our military service personnel with a weekend long war movie marathon. The series would usually encompass some of our greatest and most classic military movies of the 20th century.

For example: 'Kelly's Heroes', 'The Dirty Dozen' & 'A Bridge Too Far'.

My appreciation for these movies comes from my grandparent's love for them; I remember as a teenager visiting over the holiday weekend, and being so excited to watch some of these all-time favorites. It was so much fun reliving the experiences, and learning from my grandfather who was a dedicated servicemen in the Navy during the second World War.

As part of 'The Greatest Generation' I saw an appreciation for this country in my grandparents that has since been unmatched. They taught me how to love this country, how to appreciate my freedoms and how to honor those who are responsible for said freedoms.

That appreciation that I keep with me everyday is a direct result of the beliefs my grandparents helped instill in me. Our military and the individuals that represent us are special people... They have been in the past, and will continue to be in the future.

I can say with pride that I am proud to be a part of a family with military ties, as well as a country that has been represented and defended by such amazing people.

Memorial Day is an awesome day to celebrate our freedoms, and for me 'Operation TNT' was part of that celebration. Although the programming has since changed, the memories I have from the marathons I watched our priceless.

Just like the opportunity to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave...

Fishy Situation...

In November of 2010 an investigative piece was done by 'Outside The Lines', of the ESPN network, about Asian Carp, their introduction to United State's waters and the current threat they pose to the livelihood of many Americans.

The piece initially grabbed my attention when the segment highlighted one of this fish's unique tendencies... They jump out of the water. The report describes the vibration of passing boats as a cause for the fish to take flight. Reports are that carp as large as 60 pounds will launch themselves into the air, sometimes directly into a boat or even a person.

Can you imagine catching a 60 pound fish in the face....?

The story documents the camaraderie many locals who live near carp infested waters share... Using the desire to eradicate this fish as a reason to also have a good time.

But many of the people who live along the Mississippi River and it's tributaries are also very aware and fearful of the potential problems this species presents.

As a born Michigander and someone who wishes to see this state rebound from economic distress this story is somewhat disturbing. Next to the fact that this fish is fairly entertaining lies the undeniable truth that we as Americans introduced it to our waters without considering the negative consequences.

As of now the Asian Carp is still not known to exist in Great Lake waters or if it could even survive during the much colder winter months. However, there is no disagreement that the presence of this fish in our Great Lakes would drastically effect the economic status of surrounding states; particularly Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin.

This is an interesting piece, and it certainly identifies a problem worthy of our attention...

Hidden Treasure...

A couple of months ago my brother was visiting, and we spent some time playing with the photo booth utility on my macbook.

I never did anything with the photos... I actually had forgotten we ever took them.

Recently, I was cleaning up some of the junk on my computer and came across this picture.

It just makes me laugh... The shirt, the pose and the effects.

Occasionally you see a tattoo that seems a bit over the top.

A prime example could be described as someone who has the words 'God's Gift' inked on themselves.

Aren't we all a gift from God...?

Is it necessary to have something like this written on your body?

Isn't it more gratifying to just know that life itself is a gift?

I understand the tattoo is more of a statement.

But what about someone with the first name, God's Gift...?

Introducing newly committed St. Johns University Basketball recruit God's Gift Achiuwa.

Surrounded by siblings with names just as unorthodox, God's Gift is one of six Nigerian children born to parents Enunice and Donatus.

I like the name, It has meaning as well as substance.

It's not a nickname... It's his birth name.

The one on his certificate and the one his parents gave him.

Ultimately...

Every child is a gift from god.

The return of Monday Night Football to the city of Detroit has officially been scheduled.

October 10, 2011: The Detroit Lions will welcome MNF, The Chicago Bears and the rest of NFL nation to the "jungle", that is known as Ford Field, for the first time in stadium history.

This game will mark the first MNF visit to the city of Detroit since 2001 when the Lions were throttled by the eventual Super Bowl runner-up St. Louis Rams 35-0.

Prior to that debacle Detroit's last Monday Night Football appearance was at the Pontiac Silverdome against a Bo Jackson led Oakland Raider team that beat the Lions, and iconic running-back Barry Sanders, 38-31.

As a Lion's fan it feels good to once again be recognized by the NFL as a marketable product. Mostly because for the last couple years this football team has been making quality decisions, and taking steps in the right direction.

This football game is a reward for those successes.

It's also proof to the rest of the NFL that the roar is being restored, and very soon the Detroit Lions will reclaim their title as, 'King of the Jungle'

Last week the 2011 Ferris State Bulldog Football Team held there annual 'Bulldog Challenge Lift-A-Thon' - A chance for the program to raise money and celebrate FSU tradition.

Emceed by yours truly, this annual fund raiser provides the athletes an opportunity to demonstrate their strength, speed and agility following the winter conditioning program.

In addition to the physical testing the players are also asked to create and perform an entertaining skit as part of a team building exercise...

Very entertaining!

During The NBA AllStar Break Griffin jumped over a car, and cemented himself in NBA Dunk Contest history.

However, as prolific dunker as 'The Poster Child' is, he was recently upstaged by 'And 1 Mixtape Tour' high flyer Guy Dupuy.

For those of you who believe the dunk contest is dead, that every dunk physically possible has been accomplished, my only request is that you watch this video.

The day we said goodbye to the enigmatic 'Biggie Smalls'.

Today marks the 14th anniversary of the murder of Chris Wallace AKA The Notorious B.I.G.

Biggie's contributions to music will never be forgotten. To this day he is arguably the greatest lyricist the rap game has ever seen or heard.

Just like his equally captivating counterpart, the late/great Tupac Shakur, who's life also ended tragically early, The Notorious B.I.G.'s legacy lives on through his music.

Last Thursday I took a road-trip to Memphis with some friends, (Brett,Dustin,Mike & Steve), for a weekend visit with my brother Matt and sister in-law, Deb.

The experience was a fast paced intro to the south - Fueled by the desire to have fun.

The following posts include some memories and photographs from the weekend then has since been titled...

*We began our travels watching 'The Hangover' - When the movie finished we passed a road sign that read:

'MEMPHIS 496'

*Mike jokingly ranted about finding a strip-club/casino combo & that women should only be allowed to drive pink or white cars.

*Ironically we encountered some phantom damage to Mike's minivan during trip.

*That same car also drove through a toll-booth without paying as well as a 55 mph construction zone going 70.

*Mike set a goal at 1:29... To stay awake until 1:30

*And at 4:45 we arrived:

*At 5am Matt walks around the parking-lot in circles shocked to see Steve made the trip.

*At 5:30 Steve uses a jet engine to blow up an air mattress & rescues Mike's pillow, jacket, cell phone & wallet from the hood of his van.

*Mike woke up and went to breakfast...

He also left the door open; the temperature was 40 degrees.

*That afternoon we sat around the pool discussing the American dollar...

We determined that the weekend should be dedicated to spending the weakening buck.

*Eventually we toured Memphis' campus and athletic facilities...

*Later we visited Memphis' Finest Barbershop so that I could get a quick line-up.

*Meet Rodney Boyd

*Thanks for the fresh line Rodney!

*My line inspired Mike. So I helped him out, Tom Brady cut.

*Then we relaxed before dinner, Mike wore a pink snuggie.

*That night we went to the world famous Corky's BBQ.

*Southern BBQ is amazingly delicious... And so are girls with southern accents.

*We later settled in at a local watering hole where Charlie Sheen was toasted for the first of many times over the course of the weekend.

*I was clowned about "Twitter Bombs" & introduced to a group of girls as a professional blogger.

*Steve tried 'Flat Tire' Beer and met Vienna from 'The Bachelor'

*Matt Bonner and the San Antonio Spurs lit up the Miami Heat.

*The house band took two hours to set up and then rocked 'Proud Mary'.

*And I ate leftover Corky's DryRub ribs in the back of Mike's minivan.

*On our way home we stopped by the famous Gibson's Donuts (6 for $1.40)

*Before the Tiger Basketball game we ate at the smokiest bar in Memphis...

With munchkin waitresses and handgun warning signs.

*To the FedExForum for Memphis vs. Tulane.

*It was senior day and the final home game of the season...

*Matt got us standing room tickets in a private section.

*FedExForum is also home to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Deb used to work for the 'Grizz'...

She pulled some strings.

*Our box was right next to the 'Memphis Suite' reserved for the president of the University, who was in attendance.

*Enjoy the beer fellas... Only $8 a cup.

*After the game we went to The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium.

*Where they have over 200 beers on tap.

*These plates represent a customer who's drank 200+ beers @ Flying Saucer.

*The "champ" has 19 plates...

Almost 4000 beers.

*During dinner Mike bought and smoked a cigar.

*And our waitress claimed she's stronger than 95% of men.

*After dinner it was straight to Beale Street.

*Our first stop took us to Club 152.

*Apparently these beers are available at multiple bars for a couple bucks...

Our group elected to purchase $7 RedStripes and

$9.50 black label rum and cokes.

*At 152 we relaxed with the house band...

Who featured a very unique keyboard player that resembled John Lennon, and had fantastically odd body language.

*We moved down Beale Street

and had to make a decision.

*Silky O'Sullivans or Rum Boogie Cafe..?

*RumBoogie...

After Dustin and Steve haggle our cover from $40 to $20.

(Dustin offers to sell Holland, MI bound bouncer his house for cheap cover in return.)

*The soulful sounds of the Rum Boogie house band:

*When inside we meet a bachelorette party.

*Mike continues his smoking for the evening by puffing a Virginia Slim with one of the ladies.

*We were also grenade whistled.

*One-upped by a guy who claimed he kills deer with a crowbar.

*And given a Hallmark size business card by singer Amanda Pollard.

*Then we rocked out to "Proud Mary"...

And met 'Cougar Linda' on the dance-floor.

*That's when the night got a little crazy.

*Our bachelorette friends took dirty dancing to the next level.

*They ripped 5 of the 7 buttons off my shirt...

And my shirt of my body.

*I was called out by the lead singer of the band.

*And then found all of my missing buttons.

*On to Coyote Ugly.

*Matt is rocking my flat billed New Era LA Dodger cap like a champ.

*Steve is walking away from girls that are attempting to coax men into buying them drinks.

*We're standing next to a 330 lbs. bodyguard wearing a shirt that says 'BAMF'.

*Mike is dressed in a 'ITALIA' soccer zip-up and engaged in conversation with a dietician about metabolism...

*And we are plotting on buying Mike a body shot.

*Mike is objectified by the bartender:

*First - He's given a shot of tequila and has the lime juice chaser 'bird fed' into his mouth.

*Next - He's bent over the bar and whipped with the metal buckle of a leather belt.

*And finally he has male genitalia drawn on his back with permanent marker.

*We were told for $20 is would be worth it...

And it was!

*We capped off Beale Street by returning to Club 152.

*Where we paid a $10 cover and were denied access to the VIP floor.

*Steve and Matt used their people skills to hustle us wristbands.

*We claimed to be an extension of the bachelorette party...

And it worked!

*Dressed in zip-ups, hoodies and ripped dress shirts we made our way into the VIP.

*We were surrounded by mirrors and ambiance.

*Matt and Brett were given a lesson in southern hospitality.

*Steve met a girl from Hope College...

And did some break dancing as we left.

*We returned home and ate 100 pizza rolls that we had to make in the oven because the newlyweds Matt & Deb do not have a microwave...?

Shiny Penny...

On March 11 the Nike Air Max Penny 1 'Orlando' will hit stores as a re-release of the 1995 classic.

I wore this shoe during 8th grade basketball - At the time it was the nicest & one of the best selling basketball shoes on the market - In addition, it was ahead of it's time.

'Penny' Hardaway held the basketball shoe game down during the mid 90's with the success of his 'Air Penny' line. Along with the help of his puppet sidekick, voiced by Chris Rock, 'Lil Penny', Hardaway had arguably the most successful three year sneaker run in history.

The shoe is most definitely a classic and accurately described on sneakernews.com as:

"One of the best Nike Basketball shoes of all time. The jeweled swoosh, Max Air on the heel, pinstriped tongue, and one of the best Nike logos ever created."

Seeing the images of this shoe put me in the way back machine - Even now it makes a statement, it's no wonder it wore the belt during Penny's reign.

This clip and game are from January...

But I still cannot get enough of it.

People like Chris Webber & Bill Buckner will forever be immortalized in sporting history due to there moments of lapse in concentration. Fortunately for University of Connecticut forward Roscoe Smith, by hitting a game winning shot, teammate Kemba Walker helped keep him out of that discussion.

However, Smith did still have arguably the "Not Top Ten" highlight of the college basketball season when he went 'Manny Being Manny' on us all, and launched a premature 80 foot MoonShot with eleven second remaining in a close ballgame.

Taking into consideration the multitude of factors this poor kid probably had running through his head at a million miles an hour - As an athlete I can understand.

But that doesn't mean it's not one of the most boneheaded plays of 2011: Enjoy!

I had never heard of Babson College, and had no idea it helped educated so many 'Fortune 500' company founders.

Who are they...? You gotta watch the video if you wanna know.

These are glorified versions of the middle ages - Based on knights, tournaments and royal feasts - They are portrayed by actors and exist for entertainment purposes.

The reality is that this period of time was named the 'DarkAges' for a reason. People lived short and very harsh lives. A perfect example exists with a sport that still maintains a significant place amongst most renaissance throwbacks, jousting.

Jousting can be considered a full contact and potentially brutal sport, and in 2011 it has entered a very realistic arena far from that of the fantasy world produced by dinner theaters.

ESPN's Jeremy Schaap recently spotlighted the sport of competitive jousting...

Recently Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has stirred the pot with his white collar, business-logic driven approach to improving the state's slumping economy.

One of his decisions to help improve the efficiency of the tax-payer dollar is to tighten the clamps around the ever loosening qualifications for a state wide bridge card used to purchase perishables.

The new qualifications will make it nearly impossible to receive benefits simply because of college enrollment. In the past most low incomes, including college students, would qualify for benefits regardless of status.

Bridge cards have long been a part of this state's economics - They're important & necessary.

People must eat and do so with good nutrition. However, this already struggling state is being taken advantage of at the cost of tax-payer dollars.

Although this decision will be a difficult adjustment for many students, at the moment, It's the right decsion.

MI Stand Up...

I attempted to avoid bandwagoning this commercial and blogging about it the day after the SuperBowl like so many others.

Bottom line... It deserved every ounce of attention that it got.

For just a moment forget about the star studded cameo by Eminem and his remixed banger LoseYourself, and forget about the beautifully sleek automobile that is supposed to be the feature of the ad.

The real headliner of this commercial is the city of Detroit.

Our city... Our state...

The 'D' was given center stage on a global scale with millions watching.

Throughout time 'The Mitten' has had it's back against the wall, especially in regard to the opinions from those on the outside looking in.

This ad was special for so many more reasons than the car & driver, it was a welcomed addition to the ongoing marketing campaign to help people understand the beauty and personality of this state.

The commercial engaged me from the minute it aired - I watched it the next and it brought tears to my eyes:

Johnny Appleseed's Evil Brother

Being from the Midwest I am familiar with rivalries - For example: Ohio State & Michigan State vs. The University of Michigan.

These rivalries are heated and often times spill over from the field of competition into a different realm involving fans - Recently the state of Alabama witnessed first hand the repercussions from such an intense college rivalry - Leading to what many are calling a hate-crime.

In an attempt to avenge an Alabama loss on the gridiron to eventual National Champion Auburn, Crimson Tide enthusiast Harvey Updyke poisoned two enormous Oak Trees at Toomer's Corner which the University traditionally uses for toilet papering during celebrations.

The Oak Trees are not expected to survive the poisoning, and Updyke's "prank" now takes a place among other infamous rivalry stunts gone horribly wrong!

This story was first brought to my attention via The Jim Rome Show.

Since then it has gained massive viral popularity and become a legitimately funded private project that the city of Detroit is giving consideration.

Following a Twitter response from Mayor Dave Bing that Detroit had no plans to follow through with an idea to honor RoboCop with a statue, A groundswell of donations were made that have currently exceeded the pledge goal of $50,000 by more than ten grand.

The intention, to erect a seven foot tall RoboCop statue on private land somewhere within the city that played home to the Sci-Fi giant during the self titled movie in 1987.

With more than 30 days remaining in the projects funding stages it appears that the statue is a very real possibility - www.detroitneedsrobocop.com offers a platform for those interested in assisting.

As long as this idea stays private and does not affect tax-payer dollars I think it's fantastic!

Meet current UFC Middleweight Champion and Brazilian Mixed Martial Artist Anderson Silva.

A couple of weeks ago Silva introduced his signature front kick, taught to him by the one and only Steven Seagal, to the world, as well as Vitor Belfort's face.

My brother lives in Memphis and works for the Universities' Athletic Department. Last week he sent me a link to the website Itsallgoodauto.net after seeing their commercials running on local TV.

Last month a homeless man in Ohio named Ted Williams struck viral fame with his golden radio voice. The man who re-established himself with the help of YouTube quickly became a worldwide sensation, and was recently the topic of a spot done by the 'MorningAfter' @ WSNX.

Both Intern 'CookieMonster' and myself were asked to stroll the streets of GrandRapids in search of West Michigan's next golden voiced radio talent. Our search took us to GR's very own Division street and a couple of different homeless "hang-outs".

The experience was eye opening - I appreciated our interactions with GR's homeless community. Initially, I approached the task with some skepticism, I was nervous that our search would consist of failed attempts to interact with cold and frustrated homeless people exhibiting bad attitudes about their predicament. I was wrong - It was the exact opposite.

We were welcomed with 'open-arms' by multiple people who embraced our requests the same way they embrace their difficult situation with a positive attitude, it was a great experience. Considering the spontaneity & conditions the spot went quite well. We entertained... Had fun... And learned a little bit too: Success!

Their is a real sexiness about the game of football.

The speed... The timing... The collisions...

The overall execution of the game is very exciting.

Highlights are often made on the defensive side of the ball because people simply love a big hit!

However, what Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch did this weekend to the NewOrleans Saints' defense was nothing less than incredible.

The reaction in the stands @ Quest Field from Lynch's run registered a minor 30 second earthquake with a Seattle based seismic monitoring station.

The play is as fun to watch as any I've ever seen: Enjoy...

It's been some time since I've done any public speaking.

To stay sharp I'm spending the afternoon announcing a couple basketball games at my old stopping grounds: Big Rapids High School.

Even though I have moved on to better things since leaving Ferris State, I have not found an outlet to provide the same rush as speaking in public; I miss it!

Public speaking is a passion - Something I have every intention on making a significant part of my future.

It a good feeling to know that the majority of the public's number one fear is actually one of my biggest strengths - Let's Go!

New Work: BigTen Conference...

The 'Big Ten' Conference, America's largest and oldest Division I college athletic association has announced the re-branding of its logo.

The new logo is described by co-designer Michael Gericke as, "An attempt to symbolize the conference’s future, as well as its heritage and tradition of competition."

Previously the 'Big Ten' logo hid the number "11" in the negative space around the "T" in Ten:

Representative of the number of teams in the conference.

The new logo does not reflect the number of schools the 'BigTen' embodies, instead it's intended to be direct, simple and contemporary.

With the addition of the Nebraska CornHuskers as the conferences twelfth member in 2011 the design helps to usher in a new era.

"The Dream Is Still Alive...."

This weekend I visited 'The National Civil Rights Museum' in Memphis, Tennessee. Home to the Lorraine Motel and Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination.

I can remember doing a book report on MLK in fifth grade - I have always been interested in this enigmatic man and the influential movement he led.

I found myself engaged for two hours as I toured this building, and learned about the centuries of struggle our nation endured while breaking down race barriers between blacks & whites.

The tour documented decades upon decades of turmoil and was highlighted by Dr. King's "cause"; along with his final moments.

As I approached the display that is now 'Room 306' I was overcome by emotion. I could have very easily shed tears as I observed such a historic place. Instead, I stood overlooking the spot where Dr. King's life was taken - Deep in thought & contemplating the magnitude of this experience.

One that can only be described with one word: Powerful.

I believe Dr. King's lifelong friend Revered Samuel "Billy" Kyles said it best,

"You can kill the dreamer... But you absolutely cannot kill the dream!"

The white-tee... Is it classy or not?

I don't feel like any color is classier than white. Although in recent years the reputation of the WhiteTee has been affected quite negatively.

This established look has been trendy for decades, regarded as clean & easy.

But because of over-sized generations and negative associations we have lost touch with the essence of the white-tee.

Admittedly.... Many looks are classier than a white t-shirt - no debate.

However, I would argue that when done correctly a white-tee has substance.

My task was to report on a press conference

to announce 'LaughFest 2011':

The event behind the mysterious

GrandRapids' smiley faces.

The experience was success.

I was challenged and rose to the occasion, all while being 'brand new' to the territory.

Often times with sports we create strong bonds with our favorite teams and all that represents them. From the players and the stadiums they plan in - To the city that your team calls home, these mainstays significantly represent a pillar in many people's fan-hood.

In many situations, lost amongst a team's glamor-shot exterior, represented by superstars and their respective team's marketing machine, are the men behind the scenes - The Ernie Harwell's & Sparky Anderson's of the world.

Not that managing a MajorLeague baseball team to a World Championship, or spending a half century endearing yourself to the masses of MLB fans from the broadcast booth isn't superstar status, because it is. But as fans we take these very important, and not so glamorous, jobs for granted.

As players may spend only a few years representing a team, the position of manager and broadcaster offers an opportunity to play an extended role with an organization. Concerning the DetroitTigers - SparkyAnderson & Ernie Harwell did just that.

As a Detroit Tigers fan I feel blessed to have been able to associate with two of the best that ever did it from the dugout and behind the mic. Anderson & Harwell are as much a part of my Tigers' memories as my first trip to Michigan & Trumball... Or watching Magglio Ordonez's ALCS clinching HomeRun.

Anderson & Harwell - These men are legends!

They successfully created a lasting impression that will never fade.

The Detroit Tiger Family lost them both in 2010.

The Battle Continues - "I Am Not A Rapper..." 2

The Intern Rap Battles continued this past week culminating with the championship round on Thursday. The showdown featured Intern 'Pam Anderson' and yours truly, Pastor Blake.

This video contains segments from the road to the finals.

After eliminating Intern 'Girl That Cuts Hair', my journey consisted of me squaring off against a couple of besties from the GR Area: Intern 'Safe Sex' + Intern 'Pam Anderson'.

Neither of these ladies consider themselves rappers, and so they decided to take advantage of writing slams prior to spitting them on-air. I can understand their strategy because it's one of the reasons I don't consider myself a (battle) rapper either; It's difficult. Rhyming words with rhythm is one thing... Doing it with a spontaneous witty crack is TOUGH.

However, with such a deep respect for hip-hop and the essence of a battle, I just couldn't write something. I memory banked the punchlines to a couple of disrespectful bars, and thankfully was skilled enough to connect the dots along the way.

Yet and still, I won the competition and was crowned 'Morning After' Intern Rap Battle Champion, but the fact still remains...

I received an e-mail earlier this week from Broadway about Intern Rap Battles.

Yesterday the competition jumped-off with 'Tiny D' and Intern 'HellenKeller', and this morning was my day to face-off against Intern 'Girl That Cuts Hair'.

The experience was swaggeriffic, and slightly nerve-racking.

But as the story goes, their is a first time for everything.
